Our beloved Pacific islands, though fairly small and remote, find themselves at the forefront of the impacts of climate change and climate variability. This in turn is not only affecting the geographical, but socio-economic landscape our island homes as we pay a visit to the only remaining Kingdom in the South Pacific, to witness how the Secretariat of the Pacific Community is supporting Tonga by using participatory, hands-on approaches to build communities adaptive capacity to climate up, In 2013, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community – SPC and the Government of Kiribati signed an agreement to improve environmental health surveillance and responses to climate sensitive health agreement witnessed the establishment of a new laboratory within the Environmental Health Unit at the Ministry of Health and the provision of equipment as well as technical assistance and training. Thanks to the European Union funded Global Climate Change Alliance – Pacific Small Island States, the new laboratory will help them better monitor and respond to vector-borne diseases, such as dengue fever, and other health impacts that are sensitive to climate.
