Hokimate Harwood -- Identifying Feathers

Hokimate Harwood, Te Papa Bicultural Science Researcher, talks about identifying the feathers in more than 100 cloaks in Te Papa’s collection. Hokimate explains that ‘the placement of feathers is a way of retaining or containing memories and information. So every kind of pattern displayed some kind of information from the weaver.’ Kahu Ora Living Cloaks showcases the world’s largest collection of Mori cloaks — among the most precious taonga (treasures) to Mori and stunning in their artistry and diversity. At the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, 8 June — 21 October 2012.
